California Homeschool Network (CHN) was founded in 1994 by a statewide group of
homeschooling families. We are an inclusive group, which means we serve families
from all religious and ethnic affiliations that practice all homeschooling styles.
We are an all-volunteer organization of energetic and dedicated homeschooling families
working to preserve our own educational freedom. CHN monitors and responds to
legislation which may pose a threat to homeschooling.
We also inform and empower homeschooling families, educate the public, and foster
community among home educators in the state of California.
There are two other homeschooling organizations in California: The
Homeschooling Association of California and the Christian
Home Educators Association. CHN is unique in that we are the
only organization with an elected board,
reflecting the openness and inclusiveness of CHN. We are also
the only group that makes it clear that, while we support
all homeschooling families and the options they choose, we
are dedicating our resources to preserving the freedom to
homeschool independent of government
intervention or regulation.
CHN believes that families and children are the real experts. Parents who turn to family-centered
education are actually returning to a traditional way of helping children learn and grow. No two
homeschooling families are alike; they define and create their own methods of education,
incorporating their own values, belief systems, and talents. Decisions regarding the content,
pacing and manner of each child’s education belong first and foremost to the family. Our goal
is to provide you with a comprehensive view of homeschooling and let you decide what options
and resources are best for your individual family.
Though the homeschooling movement is firmly established, and the academic track record of
homeschooled students demonstrates remarkable success, the movement itself is not without its
critics. Proponents of public education often view homeschooling as a threat to the future of
public schools and the imposition of restrictive state or federal regulations is an ongoing
concern. CHN is committed to keeping a watchful eye on legal and legislative developments on
local, state, and national levels.
California Homeschool Network serves to inform and empower homeschooling
families, educate the public, and foster community among
home educators in the state of California. Our bimonthly newsletter,
California Homeschool News
, keeps you up-to-date on the latest news and information
from around the state. Local Contacts are available by phone
to answer your individual questions and our publications
address specific interests. CHN is a resource you can count
on.
